How this version looked
Beyond your clearing, the land is covered by the Gloom: a dark fog full of trapped strangers, hidden treasure and Gloom Beasties. Pushing it back is how your kingdom grows.
Exploring the Gloom
Areas of Gloom around your kingdom can be explored once you meet their requirements, shown when you click them. In the original game an exploration typically needed:
- some Castle Level points (see Building Your Kingdom),
- an Exploration Crystal, and
- some coins.
Exploration Crystals are crafted at the Workshop from Crystal Shards. Shards come from quests, gifts and neighbors. On L.O.S Castle, the Post for Shards button shares your request on the L.O.S Castle Discord, and every neighbor who claims it helps you (see Neighbors, Gifts & Help).
Exploring is also how you meet many characters: Richard, Izadora, Rafael and Hazel are all found by exploring. See Story, Quests & Characters.
Gloom Beasties
Beasties block the land around them until you deal with them.
- Banishing: click a Beastie to attack it. Each hit costs 1 energy, and bigger Beasties take more hits. Your neighbors can help hit your Beasties when they visit.
- Rewards: banished Beasties drop coins and XP, often energy, and sometimes parts used in the Beastie Laboratory (from level 7), which crafts items from components of Gloom Beasties.
- Charming: some Beasties, such as Gloom Rats, Wolves and Yetis, can be charmed instead. A charmed Beastie stops blocking the land around it and can be moved like a pet.
The very first thing you do in the game is banish Beasties that have cornered the Duke and Yvette. See Getting Started.
Gloom Gloop
Some items inside newly explored land are covered in Gloom Gloop and need a special crafted item to clean. The quest or the item's tooltip tells you what's needed.
Story worlds
Some places lie beyond the Gloom altogether: the story worlds Agonia, the Fairy Realm and Return to Jacque, reached through portals. Each has its own energy (portal energy) that refills over time.
